Scarce 19th century reprint of Hakluyt's very rare 16th century work. 1889-1890 four volume set, published in Edinburgh by Edmund Goldsmid is complete with quarter leather spines and with original matching marbled boards. Volumes have two title pages and a half title. The first title page is dated 1891 and notes this set is a portion of a larger work "Hakluyt's Complete Collection of Voyages" published by Goldsmid in 1891. On inspection one can see that these are the 1889-1890 volumes with the 1891 promotional title page added later. This set began life at the Public Library of New London with the only evidence being the bookplate. Later this set arrived at Ambassador College Library of Pasadena, California with only evidence being stamps on the title pages and paper edges. No pockets ever. When I acquired this set the spines of volumes 1 & 2 were perished and were replaced with black leather with gilt titles. Original matching psychedelic cobalt marbled boards remain. These four volumes are bound in 3/4 leather (spines and cover corners) with marbled covers and endsheets. Volume One: 1850 - 1854, Volume Two: 1854 - 1860, Volume Three: 1860 - 1862, Volume Four: 1862 - 1864. All four volumes are in Very Good Condition. Volume Four contains a pocket inside the back cover containing six maps. Due to the size of this item, expedited or priority shipping prices will be individually quoted. London: William Pickering, 1845. Small Octavo. Aldine edition of the British poets. In 6 volumes. Portrait frontispiece in volume one. A collection of Chaucer's poetical works along with a memoir. An exceptionally nice set. Though all the volumes appear to have been rebacked at an early date and beautifully executed. (It would not have been noticeable except; the marbled endpapers did not match the marbled edges). A beautiful set, bound in full polished calf, spines flat, maroon and brown spine labels gilt, gilt ruled compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, all edges marbled, remarkably fresh and bright internally, with a few bumped corners. A lovely set.
