ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1963. First U.S. edition with scarce wraparound band reading " 'DUTTON EDITION IS SUPERIOR'/ Harrison Salisbury - NEW YORK TIMES." This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.' The prisoners were forbidden ... to call the guards 'comrade' ...." 8vo light gray-green rough cloth boards stamped in green on front and spine; top edge stain green; 160 pp. Darkening to endpapers apparently from binding itself but also along outer edge of front free endpaper presumably from an item previously laid in otherwise a crisp, clean copy of the book in a good dust jacket showing rubbing, small chips and general wear but interesting nonetheless for the presence of the seldom seen wraparound band. Also included is a copy of the paperback issue of the Praeger edition (presume issued simultaneously with the hardback).
