When John Adams asked in 1815 "Who will write the history of the American Revolution?", one of the unlikely candidates was an Italian historian, whose History of the American Revolutionary War is one of the first accurate historical works on this issue. Botta's work was based on contemporary documents and material largely supplied by Lafayette. Ref: Graesse, I, 505
