About This Item

New York:: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1922.. Hardcover first edition -. Very good in brown cloth covers with gold and orange lettering, orange tinting to top of textblock (previous owner's name dated Oct 1922 on front endpaper, very minor wear to the covers) in a rather poor supplied 4th printing dust jacket from 1922 (the dust jacket has several chips, and is split along the spine and at the fold for the front flap, but it has the original text on the front cover by Knopf, no mention of the Pulitzer Prize, and the original price of 2.50 on the lower flap, but it also states "4th large printing" on the spine and has plain flaps). First trade edition (issued after a signed limited edition) of Cather's only Pulitzer prize winning novel, the story of a Nebraska farm boy who goes off to war in France. One of only 12,000 copies (Crane pp 91-92.) In fact, within just 13 months, this book went through 8 printings, attesting to its popularity at the time. 459 pp.

Synopsis

One of Ours is a novel by Willa Cather which won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize. It tells the story of the life of Claude Wheeler, a native of Nebraska around the turn of the 20th century. The son of a successful mid-western farmer and an intensely pious mother, thus guaranteed a comfortable livelihood, Claude Wheeler nonetheless views himself as a victim of his father's success and his own inexplicable malaise.
