This is the story of a young boy in New Jersey and his best friend, Onion John, a hermit. Onion John lives in a house he built out of piled-up stones and four bath tubs (no running water). He eats onions the way And eats apples. Goodness and happiness radiate from him. Whether his talk is understandable or not, whether his methods of bringing rain, making apples grow large, or celebrating Halloween make sense to the world at large, they make sense to Andy. What happens with Andy's father and his friends in the Rotary decide to transform Onion John's way of life make up this story.
Synopsis
Onion John is a novel written by Joseph Krumgold and published in 1959. It was the winner of the 1960 Newbery Medal. The story is set in 1950s New Jersey, and tells the story of 12-year-old Andy Rusch and his friendship with an eccentric hermit who lives on the outskirts of the small town of Serenity.
