About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, 1969. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Hardcover in black cloth. Inscribed on the second front blank "For Scott_____/ from Svetlana Alliluyeva". There is an additional notatoion (not in the author's hand' on the same page that reads, "February 4, 1970/ 50 Wilson Road/ Princeton" (see below). Very good, slightly cocked. In a somewhat tired dust jacket with toning to the spine and a bit to the white panels and shallow wear to the spine extremities. Svetlana Alliluyeva (1926-2011) was the youngest child, and only daughter, of Joseph Stalin. She caused an international sensation in1967 when, by way of India, she defected to the United States where, eleven years later she became a naturalized citizen. A few months after her 1967 arrival, she moved to Princeton, New Jersey (hence the notation mentioned above). Her first book, "Twenty Letters to A Friend" was a worldwide betsseller and made her a millionaire (though she gave away large amounts of money and later became impoverished. "Only One Year" was her second book, a story that began when she left Russia for India on a one month's visa, in the custody of an employee of the Soviet Ministry of Foreign affairs, carrying an urn containing hre husband's ashes. The journey ended in Princeton.
