ASSOCIATION COPY: xxiv, 454 pages, illustrated, portrait frontispiece, 30 tail pieces, plus 9 plates, 3 maps, 6 drawings/engravings. Blue leather boards with decorative spine, gilt titling, five raised bands. Marbled end papers and page edges. Shelf wear, covers stained and worn, minor edge wear to pages of index and part of 1st map missing, not affecting map, small rips to leather covers, map inserted on page 36 is a colour COPY, contents clean. Bookplate of Hugh Cecil Earl of Lonsdale on rear of front cover,(In 1888, Lonsdale set out to reach the North Pole, nearly dying before reaching Kodiak, Alaska in 1889 and returning to England). A.B. 6795. Hayes, who had been a member of Kane's last expedition, led this effort to extend Kane's exploration in the Smith Sound region. He was a strong believer in the "open polar sea" - that is that the Arctic Ocean was open and free of ice above latitude 80 or so. Narrative of the Hayes Arctic Exploring Expedition to extend northward the exploration of the Second Grinell Expedition and to make scientific observations and collections. It describes the voyage along the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island to Smith Sound, sledge journeys to 82 degrees and the native peoples. Quantity Available: 1.
