About This Item
Cologne: J. Schrey & H. J. Meyer,, 1688. An attractive copy of this collected edition, with text printed in parallel Latin and Greek, in a contemporary vellum binding featuring an unusual and intricately designed centrepiece. First published in 1616, this work was compiled and edited by the Dutch scholar Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655), one of the most famous philologists of the Renaissance, professor of Latin and Greek at the University of Leiden. Heinsius's editions of Clement are mentioned by Dibdin among the best and most valuable. The style of the blindstamped decoration on the covers is typical of the period in Northern Europe. Although similar vellum bindings are recorded on other copies of this title, the arabesque centrepiece on the present work appears to be uncommon. It incorporates the monogram "FH", likely the signature of a bookbinder's workshop, perhaps executing bindings for the publishers. Folio (353 x 225 mm) in sixes, pp. 1044. Contemporary vellum, spine with five blind ruled raised bands and red morocco label, covers ruled in blind, central panel with blind stamped fleurons at inner corners, arabesque strapwork and pointille centrepiece signed "FH", edges sprinkled red. Title page in red and black with engraved vignette printer's device illustrating Hercules, Minerva, and motto "Utilitas iunxit, labor ac industria servat", woodcut floriated initials and headpieces, tailpieces with putti and masks. Some soiling to covers, a little loss of vellum to upper outer edge of front cover, upper outer corner of rear cover repaired, occasional browning or foxing to contents, wormtrail to upper outer corners of leaves a4-b2 repaired with clear tape, not affecting text. A very good, well-margined copy. Brunet II, 93; Dibdin I, 188 (for the 1616 edition).
