About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1993. First Edition. First Printing, advance issue, one of an unstated number of copies specially bound from proof sheets for booksellers. Octavo (24.25cm); slate paper-covered boards and blue cloth backstrip, with title label mounted to front cover; [13],14-398,[2]pp. Briefly inscribed by Roth on the title page. A few tiny scuffs to backstrip, faint sticker residue to upper front cover, else Near Fine. Roth's sixteenth novel, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1994. The advance issue is ubiquitous, but we've seen very few signed or inscribed.

Synopsis

Operation Shylock: A Confession is novelist Philip Roth's 19th book and was published in 1993. The novel follows narrator "Philip Roth" on a journey to Israel where he attends the trial of accused war criminal John Demjanjuk. At the same time, the character seeks out an impersonator who has appropriated his identity and used his celebrity to spread "Diasporism," a counter-Zionist ideology advocating the return of Israeli Jews to their countries of origin.
