Basle: [apud] Henricum Petri & Petrum Pernam, 1562. First Edit. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio. (xvi); 573; (blank verso); (xviii) pages. Minor worming towards the rear. Rebound red morocco. With the bookplate of the educational reformer and founder of the Dartington Trust L. K. Elmhirst. This is a comprehensive and rare treatise on toxicology in the first (and sole?) edition, 'by many hitherto desired', the work of a doctor, Santis de Ardoynis, originally written at Venice c.1426. Drawing on a wide range of classical (especially Galen) and later authorities as well as his own experience, Ardoynis presents in 8 books general definitions, particularizing types of poison e.g. metallic, natural (air and water), plants, animal (especially reptiles and fish, to which Book 6 is devoted), and even man himself, with the twin aims of preservation and cure. His work is followed by a short treatise on the same subject by Cardinal Ponzetti, originally published 40 years before and now much improved. Adams,1546

Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51.…

"In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…
