About This Item

1561 Philipp Melanchthon 1ed Epitaphs on Death Luther Wittenberg Reformation

"But faith is not belief in the history of Christ, as the godless think, but belief in the purpose of Christ's incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection."

― Philipp Melanchthon, Loci Communes

Philipp Melanchthon was a 16th-century Protestant theologian known for his role in the Protestant Reformation. His book 'Loci Theologici', or more simply a system of theology, was a treatise many church reformers produced. Throughout the mid-1500s, numerous other theologians wrote and lectured on Melanchthon's 'Loci' and provided commentary on his life and work, especially following his death in 1560. One such work was "Orationes epitaphia et scripta" – a collection of writings, speeches, letters, and epitaphs on the death of Melanchthon. This 1561 first edition provides first-hand accounts of Melanchthon's last days as well as the impact his ministry had on Lutheranism and Protestantism in Europe.
