About This Item
[Np, c.1897]. Original Pen and Ink Drawing with caption. Stiff artist's paper. 13½ x 16 inches overall; image 11 x 13 inches. With some pencil under-drawing; blue pencil editorial annotations in left margin. Some staining or toning in margins, not affecting image; very good.
Original editorial cartoon drawing depicting the Tammany Tiger of New York City's Democratic Party political machine. The political cartoon is signed at the lower left by artist F.K. Houston.
Captioned "Ratification or else an Indigestible Meal," the cartoon shows the iconic Tammany Tiger eagerly swallowing a large rat labeled "Chicago Platform, Candidates and Everything Else."
The reference to the Chicago platform is to the national Democratic Party's presidential convention held there in 1896 and which nominated William Jennings Bryan as their anti-gold standard (and pro-silver standard) candidate.
The following year, in the fall of 1897, Democratic free silver clubs in New York demanded that the Tammany machine reaffirm the Chicago Platform in the local elections that year-"an Indigestible Meal" indeed for Tammany.
Ref. Wilcox, "The First Municipal Campaign of Greater New York" in Municipal Affairs, Vol. II, No. 2 (New York, 1898), pp215-218. Note. An F.K. Houston appears in the record as being an instructor at The New York School of Art, 1896-1902.
