About This Item
Never Published, 1815. HB. Quarter tan leather and green paper covered boards, 8vo, 164 hand numbered pages. Title page states "Bowen Adams Manuscript, AD 1815." Very nice example of a cypher book, an educational method of teaching both mathematics and penmanship used in Europe and early America. Contains nearly every example of colonial era mathematics needed for an educated citizen, including: Reduction, Decimal Fractions, Federal money and conversions, Interest, Rule of Three, Square Root, Cube Root, Fellowship, Barter, Loss & Gain, Duodecimals, Alligation, Timber Measure, Single and Double Position, Discount, Equation of Payments, and Carpenter's Work. Contains solutions to problems as to feeding of soldiers in fortifications, computing of various volumes of wine and ale, measurements of land and distance, and travel times. Covers show light moisture stain, joints starting to crack but binding tight. Remarkably, in a handmade dust jacket of rather crude brown paper with series of numbers and the same handwritten statement "Bowen Adams Manuscript, 1815" on cover. Author was probably from East Medway, Mass., born 1798. Dust jacket shows chipping and edge wear. Book condition VG. Pages are clean and legible.
