About This Item

(Kyoto, [Meiji period]). Two-page spread with central fold (247 x 332 mm). Excellent condition. The career of Kono Bairei (1844-1895) straddled the transition between Japan's centuries of isolation and the westward-looking mood of the Meiji Restoration. His works are very traditional, and, in contrast with such artists as Hokusai and Hiroshige, are characterised by a limited palette reflecting ancient Chinese and Japanese influences. .
