Description:
British airship commander, the first to use a British airship on patrol in World War One and the first to make a transatlantic airship flight in 1919. ALS, 2pp (single leaf), 4½" X 7½", Cardington, England, 1930 February 25. Addressed to the librarian of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Near fine. Single original mailing fold. Blind-embossed crest. Boldly penned in blue fountain pen from the "Royal Airship Works," Scott transmits "the 'Royal Aeronautical Society' Journal, of November 1929 [not present], which include a copy of the lecture I gave before the Society, on the subject of 'Handling & Mooring of Airships'...." Handsomely signed in full. Scott was killed eight months later in the spectacular crash of the airship R 101 in northern France -- which signaled the end of Britain's interest in dirigibles. Extremely scarce in this form, especially with dirigible content.

ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED, WITH AUTOGRAPH INSERTIONS
by Dahlberg, Edward
- Used
Mallorca, Spain, 1964. Six and one half closely typed octavo pages, plus covering t.l.s., as well as a relatively clean typescript, 7 leaves, probably secretarial, of a revised draft. Fine. Addressed to William Arrowsmith, in response to a questionnaire for ARION magazine. Discursive, vintage Dahlberg, in response to the query "What do we mean by the word 'classic'?" Dahlberg holds forth on the value and necessity of a knowledge of the classics, while unhesitatingly pointing to new classics, as well as to the merits and demerits of the works of his contemporaries: Pound, Tate, Bourne, Herbst, Eliot, Murray, et al. He continues in response to queries about the nature of education, teachers, etc. He sums up: "Still, had I to repeat my youth, I should look for the Olive of Minerva in our pantheons of learning...The American college is no cloister...Spite of natural human error, and the influence of the Mammon literary agora, it is conceivable that our Thoreaus, Melvilles and Poes will not be obscure wraiths in our own day...The parables are more important than the raiment and the meat; for the poet can somehow endure indigence but not the neglect of his books." Six of the seven pages of the response bear manuscript insertions and corrections, some very substantial. The second typescript, also 7pp. is relatively clean and incorporates Dahlberg's revisions as evident in the worked over text of the earlier draft. It was typed on a different typewriter, and may have been prepared by a staff member of ARION. Published as Billings C108.

Quarto. The collection contains 125 pieces of original correspondence including both TLS (Typed Letters Signed) and ((LS) Letters Signed. What began as a small electrical shop for the repair and manufacture of telephone equipment in 1884 as the north Electric Works grew to become the North Electric Company in 1889. By the early 20th Century the company became one of the most prominent manufacturing business in Ohio employing over 300 workers. After being in business for over a century, the business first was taken over by Ericsson and the by IYTY. These letters pertain to the problems stemming from a patent for the automatic ringing mechanism, switch boards and operators as well as dealing with their manufacture under Canadian Parents which became know as the Telechronometer Co. The big change ended the flat-rate system and introduced meters which could measure the length of calls and, of course, increase the cost to the consumer. For the next sixty years, the telephone company became a monopoly…
