About This Item

New York: Basic Books, Inc, 1981 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Edited and with an introduction by Adam Watson. Rust-brown cloth, 252 pp, bibliography, index. One corner lightly bumped, light edge wear, small spots on top edge and fore-edge, else as new. Dj has slight edge wear, a wrinkle in front panel, and a small closed tear at top of back panel near spine; in Brodart archival cover. Butterfield researched the topic of how an awareness of history first developed in various cultures over the last 15 years of his life. The results of that research form his last, and posthumously published book. Chapter headings: the origins of historical writing; the annals of the pre-classical empires; the originality of the Hebrew scriptures; the rise of classical historiography; the Chinese tradition of historical writing; the establishment of a Christian historiography; the development of historical criticism; the great secularization. Butterfield was evidently also researching Islamic historiography, but had not progressed far enough to write it up at the time of his death. Shipping weight 2 lbs.. 2nd ptg. . Near Fine/Near Fine. 24 X 16 cm.
