New York: G.P. Putnam & Sons, 1911. First American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 Volumes. Tall octavos. Bound in red cloth with beautiful bright gilt decoration and titles to front. Gilt impression of Horus to spine along with gilt titles. Top edges gilt. 404, 440 pages. Large color fold-out frontis to each volume. 4 photographic plates and 2 large black and white folding plates to volume one. Numerous black and white line drawings and figures throughout both volumes. Some small discoloration marks to front and back of both volumes. Some marks to spine of volume II. Small, old catalog listing for this set affixed to front pastedown of volume one. This remains a very good set. This is without a doubt, the most comprehensive, scholarly work on Osiris and the historical cults surrounding his ancient origins, modes of worship, and his role as God of the afterlife, the underworld, and the dead. Included are translations of numerous texts and detailed accounts of the Heaven of Osiris, his cult of resurrection, his iconography, liturgies, shrines and ritual mysteries (both dark and light), his association with human sacrifice and funeral and burial practices, his role as judge of the dead, as well as detailed links connecting the mythology of Osiris worship and those of other African religions. A fascinating study.
