About This Item
Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 1997. Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white photos, maps, minor edgewear. 231 pp. Shedding new light on the history of the Cold War, Philip Nash tells the hidden story of what the United States gave up to help end the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. President Kennedy agreed to remove Jupiter missiles from Italy and Turkey, an arrangement concealed from both the American public and NATO allies. Despite misgivings, both Eisenhower and Kennedy proceeded to deploy the missiles, in response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik satellites. This deployment played a significant role in the response of Soviet leader Krushchev to deploy his missiles to Cuba.
