About This Item

Alexandria, VA, 1987. Watercolor on art paper, 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches, matted. Abbott (1920-1988) was a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia, working at Fort Belvoir while leading various Audubon Society activities, including bird counts. He wrote and illustrated a number of books and pamphlets concerning the ornithology of Fort Belvoir, was "an authority on the American Bald Eagle," and his 1957 painting of the Common Eider won the annual contest to become that years' Federal Duck Stamp (his painting of the Pale-bellied Brant Goose was that year's runner-up, giving him the distinction of being the only artist to finish first and second in the competition in the same year). A fierce and majestic portrayal of our National bird. Fine. (#6829).
