About This Item

This is a handsome, antique copy of "Our Old Home" - A Series of English Sketches by NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE. Annotated with passages from the author's note-books. 1901; Houghton, Mifflin and Company; Boston and New York. This edition features a frontispiece engraving of Hawthorne, and numerous full-page photogravures (with descriptive tissue guards). Gilt top page edges. The book is a collection of 12 essays about England, as follows: Consular Experiences; Leamington Spa; About Warwick; Recollections of a Gifted Woman; Litchfield and Uttoxeter; Pilgrimage to Old Boston; Near Oxford; Some of the Haunts of Burns; A London Suburb; Up the Thames; Outside Glimpses of English Poverty; Civic Banquets.

Condition:
Clean covers and spine. Bright gilt top page edges. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is an insignificant crack at the front hinge between the title page and frontispiece - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. There is a neatly written Christmas inscription dated 1910 in ink on the front end paper. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and clean with only a few tiny stains at the outer margin of the title page (see photo). The tissue guard over the frontispiece has a 1" tear at the lower-inner corner. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
