22 & 24 N. William St., N. Y.: Heppenheimer & Maurer, [ca 1881]. 12mo (5" x 7.5") chromolithograph. An original cigar box label vividly portraying a long-haired, cigar-smoking jockey riding into the sunset atop a bucking horse, holding an American flag and a double-sash bearing the names of champion racehorses "Iroquois" and "Fox Hall"; strewn about are laurel crowns and bouquets of roses. In 1881, "Iroquois" and "Fox Hall" each won multiple races at Newmarket, Ascot, Doncaster and Epson, England. Lithographer Louis Maurer and Frederick Heppenheimer were in partnership from 1874 to 1884. Maurer was also the father of noted modernist painter Alfred Henry Maurer, 1913 Armory Show participant, cohort of Arthur Dove and John Marin. CONDITION: Good, light soiling and creasing, paper tape remnant on verso.
