About This Item

(Cape Town: Books of Africa, 1970). Illustrated by Penny Miller. Large 8vo; pictorial boards; pp. 293; plates; line drawings. Cover rubbed, irregularly sunned and a little fishmothed; gift inscription to front free endpaper; edges browned and spotted; foxing to endpapers and outer leaves, occasionally elsewhere. Good. A miscellany of stories from the 80-year history of the British South Africa Police (BSAP). "The beginning of the British South Africa Police came on 15th August, 1885, at Barkly West (near Kimberley) when enrolment commenced for what was named the Bechuanaland Border Police. The Warren Expedition had just concluded its task of pacifying the disturbed no-mans-land where the frontiers of the Cape Colony, the South African Republic (Transvaal), and the territory of the Botswana tribes met in a confusion of claims and political rivalries. ... Law and order in Rhodesia has become synonymous with the unimpeachable and impartial character of its police force. Throughout the 150,333 square-mile area of beautiful winderness which makes up the country, it became possible for any man to travel at will without fear of molestation or interference, and with the confidence of the knowledge that in any need, the sympathetic and ready assistance of the police could be entirely depended upon." - From the Prelude by T. V. Bulpin .
