About This Item
Paris: Claudii Thibout & Pet. Esclassan, 1685. 2nd Edition. Leather. VG+. Octavo. Original full brown leather with gilt panels on spine and Red leather label gilt. Front and rear panels embossed. This is the 2nd edition (1st was 1675) of the famous Delphine edition of Virgil, edited by the great Jesuit orator and classicist Charles de la Rue ie. Carolus Ruaeus; Wordsworth consulted this text when preparing his translation of the Aeneid. Signature on the title page of previous owner John Coryton, very likely Sir John Coryton of Newton-Ferrars, d. 1739; his widow was Rachel nee Helyar, of Coker Court, hence the bookplate of that house on the Front paste down. Title Page dated 1685 but at the end of text, Ex Typographia David Roger 1689. Perhaps a later printing of the 2nd edition? Book is in great shape, hinges very good.
