About This Item

Los Angeles, CA: Pacific Ready-Cut Homes, Inc., 1330 South Hill St., 1921. 4to. 144 pp. With 100s of black & white text illustrations, diagrams, over 125 blueprint floor plans & diagrams. Colour-illustrated softcovers, striking Art Deco cover art of bungalow amidst palm and eucalyptus trees, a vivid home w/ white garden trellises and red roof on back cover, price-lists tipped-in, Sanitas wallpaper covering flyer laid-in as well (minor dustsoiling, light shelfwear), still VG bright copy, from the library of Millard Armstrong (1874-1958), longtime Portland, Oregon millwright, carpenter, home builder, and later high school teacher, and Albany, OR dairy farmer. First edition, thus, of this relatively scarce & lavishly illustrated architectural catalogue for the famed Southern California manufacturer of ready-to-assemble homes, which from 1908 to 1940 sold nearly 40,000 homes based on 1800 plans across the West. These well-designed California bungalows replaced the fancy Victorians in many western neighborhoods, and although most of the homes were one story, they also sold schools, gas stations, duplexes, bungalow court apartments, hotels, and office buildings. This catalogue also lists plumbing, sashes, doors, mantels, cabinets, trim, water heaters, and more, with total cost ranging from $ 600.00 to $ 25,000. In 1922, Pacific Ready-Cut built a dozen model homes at South Hill Street near Pico Boulevard, and would receive over 80,000 potential customers viewing them. Hundreds of these homes still dot Pomona, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Claremont, Glendale, South Central Los Angeles, and many other regional neighborhoods. This catalogue also includes plans for real estate office, gas station, bank, library, and barn as well. Worldcat locates 1 copy; See: Carolyn Flynn, Pacific Ready-Cut Homes; Mass-Produced Bungalows in Los Angeles, 1908-1942; Pollard-Terry, 12,000 Easy Pieces, Was Your ‘20s House Built From a Kit?
