About This Item
Hackbridge, Carshalton, Surrey, England: At the Sign of the Rose, 1899. A patch of offsetting to the first leaf, where something was once laid in; covers a bit marked and with a touch edge wear, still very near fine.. 8vo, unpag.; original printed wrappers. One of an unknown, though certainly small, number of copies of this special number. The Page was the first of Craig's notably idiosyncratic and adventurous, self-produced periodicals. Issues of it are delicate and very scarce. As with other issues, this one is comprised almost entirely of contributions by Craig himself, in text and image. Includes fourteen original engravings by Craig, five of which are hand colored. Tipped in at the rear is the rare broadsheet announcement of his sister Edith Craig's service designing and producing theatrical costumes. This copy has been inscribed and signed by Craig on the first leaf for the noted bibliophile Clement Shorter. Fletcher & Rood E1(h).
