First edition of the author's first book; 8vo; frontispiece. Near Very good condition, with no inscriptions and light spotting to prelims/closed page edges. In Good+ original dustwrapper with fading to spine. The dustwrapper is designed by Peter de Francia and is not price-clipped (Published price 18s.). The first published book by the English art critic, novelist, painter and poet John Berger, whose novel G. won the Booker Prize in 1972. The novel revolves around the disappearance of Janos Lavin, a fictional exiled Hungarian painter, and his diary's discovery by an art critic friend called John; it was withdrawn by the publisher under pressure from the Congress for Cultural Freedom a month after its publication.
