About This Item

New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1988. Hardcover. VG- (DJ has moderate wear to top edge with a small tear at rear; DJ is also aging inside; plate pages are beginning to tan at edges; some instances of penciled handwriting in text and margins; otherwise crisp and clean.). Dark siena cloth, gilt letters on spine, beige and color illus. dust jacket, 310 text pp. followed by pages of 239 BW plates. "Presents an important new study of the history paintings which resulted from the politicized patronage of Louis-Philippe's government. These works have usually been dismissed by art historians as embodiments of an aesthetic juste milieu, an unambitious middle ground between Romanticism and Classicism. Marrinan challenges this evaluation, arguing that their style was precisely tailored to the propagandistic requirements of the Orleans regime." (dj) Includes more than 200 views of relevant paintings. Uncommon.
