About This Item
Sydney: The Shepherd Press, 1945. Hardcover. Fine. Lindsay, Normal. First and only edition. Hardcover. Fine in a near very good jacket. #346 of 1,000 with facsimile signature.
14 reproductions in color and 16 half-tone plates reproduced in black and white. Essays by Douglas Stewart and Norman Lindsay. Bound in gorgeous green textured paper-covered boards. Gilt embossed nude harpy on the front cover. The jacket has a pen & ink woman with a leopard's legs on the cover and no other titles or art...it's nicely understated and elegant!
The plates are primarily but not entirely female nudes, often with several figures. Some are based on mythology and allegory. Many are from his recognizable models, including his wife Rose who began as one of his models. She was responsible for printing and proofing his etchings, among many other duties, and is the subject of the book "A Model Wife."
The book is lightly rubbed on the bottom edge and the top and bottom of spine, still a bright, relatively unblemished copy well protected by the jacket. The front and rear gutters have been reinforced professionally with cloth tape.
The jacket, which is understandably uncommon, is of heavy cream-colored paper. It's slightly toned on the top and bottom edge, with 1/4-1/2" of paper loss on three of the tips. Three very small (1/2") tears to the bottom edge of the rear, two 1" edge tears and one 2 1/2" tear, in the front cover.
Laid in loose are three newspaper articles, two on his then-still-living models, from 1990 and 1997.
