About This Item

1871., 1871.. Very good. - Harcourt inscribes a 3-1/2 inch high by 5-5/8 inch wide partial sheet of note paper: "The rights of women 1871" and signs himself "W. V. Harcourt". Pakington responds below: "should always be maintained but never overstrained / John S. Pakington". The paper, which is mounted on a slightly larger piece of card, is embossed in blind at left with a device and the words "Amor Patria". The left edge is slightly rippled from the mounting. Very good.

Sir William George Venables Harcourt [1827-1904] was a British lawyer, journalist and Liberal statesman. He served as Member of Parliament for Oxford, Derby, then West Monmouthshire and held the offices of Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under William Gladstone.
