About This Item

London: W. & R. Chambers, Limited. Cloth. Fair/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Benatar, Molly. A scarce title in any state, this is an early 20th century edition illustrated by Molly Benatar. The first edition was published by Hatchards in 1887 and illustrated by Harriet M. Bennett. This copy has no publication date, although there is a faint gift inscription to ffep dated 1925. Brown pictorial boards with designs by Molly Benatar to upper and spine. Light soiling, rubbing and bumping but an attractive copy nonetheless. Frontispiece detached and 1 of the 6 plates by Benatar missing. Foxing throughout but heaviest to front and end matter. No bookplates or inscriptions other than gift inscription as mentioned above. 245 pp. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. "Three children, the eldest of whom is supposed to tell the story, find vast delight in a house [Rosebuds] into which they find their way through a certain mysterious garden door. It is not inhabited, and yet it is not deserted, and the little adventurers seem to have discovered a real romance. And then one day a picture which they have been ad- miring seems to have suddenly stepped down from its frame, for there is a young lady greeting them, quite as pretty, - indeed, far prettier ; and she has, they learn, the same Christian name as one of them." ~ Review from The Spectator, 1887.
