About This Item

[African-American Film], [Blaxploitation] Pam Grier Archive of 6 Lobby Card Photographs. American International Pictures, 1973 - 1975. Each lobby card measures 10" x 8". Films include Coffy, Friday Foster and Sheba, Baby. Each of the films were noteworthy and paved the way for Black women in leading action roles. Grier's stylish look and attitude made her an iconic figure in 1970s film, especially in the Blaxploitation genre. Her groovy 70's look, quick wit, and sharp tongue were all emphasized in these films, reshaping the often negative, stereotypical portrayals of Black women in its time. Two Lobby Cards in color show Grier in Sheba, Baby, both vibrant and vintage showcasing her 70s aesthetic. In one, she appears on the boat wearing her iconic cut-off Hawaiian shirt. Two Lobby Cards in color from Friday Foster feature Grier, one in her pink suit standing next to Yaphet Kotto. Grier appears in one of two black and white Lobby Cards from Coffy, wearing a cocktail dress and standing next to Robert DoQui. These film played a pivotal role in conveying Black women in a positive, strong, and empowering light, and as a result, Grier redefined African-American beauty, sexuality, and womanhood, which led to the diversification of African-American actresses on-screen. This archive marks the first shift in the portrayal of Black women in the Blaxploitation genre. All 6 lobby cards are in very good condition.
