About This Item

Lisbon, na Officina de Joseph da Costa Coimbra, 1754.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound. Woodcut vignette (2 cornucopias) on title page. Two woodcut headpieces. Two large historiated initials. Large woodcut tailpiece with an allegorical figure (?). Light browning, large brownish stain in one corner throughout (not affecting legibility). Overall in near-good condition. 19 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this essay celebrating the nomination of the second Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon. The first patriarch of Lisbon, named in 1716, was Tomás de Almeida (1670-1754); he was raised to the cardinalate in 1737. His successor was José Manoel da Câmara (1754–1758), a member of the family of the Conde de Atalaya (Marquês de Tancos). Antonio Wever (b. Lisbon, 1711) became an Oratorian novice, switched to the Domincans in 1727, then returned to the Oratorians. Innocêncio states that he went mad in 1745, apparently from a fright caused by a thunderclap, and had a monomaniacal belief henceforth that he would be elected as Pope John XVII in 1762. Therefore he immediately began studying canon law at the University of Coimbra. Wever explained this to Cardinal-Patriarch Tomás de Almeida in a 1745 letter, of which Innocêncio had seen a copy. The final paragraph of the Panegyrico seems to be an explanation and exculpation of some of Wever's previous actions, but we're not certain whether it indicates that he's been cured, or that his obsession has deepened. On the title page, he describes himself (quite comprehensively!) as "philosopho, theologo, bacharel formado na Faculdade dos Sagrados Canones pela Universidade de Coimbra, advogado nos Auditorios desta Corte, ecclesiastico, secular, e legacîa." *** Innocêncio I, 296, without collation; for the author, see also VIII, 321; Aditementos, p. 65. Porbase locates two copies, both at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Not located in Jisc. KVK (51 databases searched) locates only the copies cited by Porbase.
