Pine Ridge: N.p., [ca. 1895]. Original albumen photograph measuring 23 3/4 x 9 inches pn contemporary mat with one inch larger margins. Some speckling and dulling but a very unusual image.The image shows 11 cowboys leading a large herd of cattle on the South Dakota plains. No photographer credit given. From the estate of the Henry Dawson Jr.. Henry "Hal" Americus Dawson (b 1856, d 1937 he arrived at Pine Ridge in 1885, he received a license to operate a trading post on the Pine Ridge reservation in 1890, one year after the massacre at Wounded Knee). He learned the language and customs of the Oglala, who named him “Pasu Hanska,” or Long Nose. Among his good friends were the moderate leaders American Horse and Young Man Afraid of His Horses. By family attribution Hal is in the photograph.
