UK,8vo wraps,1st edn,2-94pp [paginated] includes contents list/table with thumbnail,b/w contemporary paddle steamer photograph,an introduction,4 chapters, profuse contemporary b/w photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book,appendices(3); plus [unpaginated] a b/w River Tamar map to reverse of front cover,b/w proposed paddle-steamer plans illustrated title page, sources and acknowledgements with b/w riverside scenic photograph to its reverse and an 1865 facsimile reproduction advert for Steamer Excursions - out to the Breakwater and upriver to Calstock etc.
This book traces the 160 year history (then 1984) of passenger steamer services on the River Tamar, recalling trips once run to the present day backwaters of St German Quay, Forder Lake and on the Tavy to Lopwell, its quay no longer accessible to pleasure boats. It also records the intricate network of regular steamer services that once operated on the Hamoaze,of which the Cremyll Ferry alone survives.
Primarily the following pages chronicle the story of the Tamar's paddle steamer fleets, including the Tamar & Tavy Steamship Company's much loved 'Aerial'; the Devon & Cornwall Tamar Steam Packet's graceful 'Alexandra'; the Calstock market boat 'Empress',the Saltash,Three Towns & District Steamboat Company that virtually monopolised all Tamar services toward the end of the 19thC and the surviving Millbrook Steamboat Company who boats have visited the traditional Tamar destinations of Calstock,Morwellham and Weir Head for almost a century.
