[Washington: National Intelligencer, 1851]. First Edition. Large octavo (26.5cm.); stitched self-wrappers; 40pp.; text in double columns. Wrapper extremities a bit toned and chipped, else Good to Very Good overall. Collection of articles first published in the government news outlet the "National Intelligencer" on the growing rift between the North and South. Contents devoted chiefly to criticizing talk of secession in South Carolina, noting that "it will be proper to exhibit to our readers proof that DISUNION, consequent disgrace to our country, and demolition of all the hopes which humanity has founded upon the success of a Confederate Republic like that of the United States, are in the contemplation of the Councils of SOUTH CAROLINA" (p. 11). Attributed to Joseph Gales (1786-1860), proprietor of the "National Intelligencer." SABIN 26369.
