A social commentary by Thomas Carlyle in respond to the economic crises in Britain 1840s, with much criticism of nineteenth century British society by comparison of the monks' devotion to work showcased in late-twelfth century work Chronicles of the Abbey of Saint Edmund's Bury by Jocelin of Brakelond with the faulty leadership of Victorian Britain. In a full calf binding. Complete with half title. In a full calf binding, with marbled edges and endpapers. Externally generally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing tot he spine and boards, and along the joints. Previous owner's gift inscription to the title page dated 1844, ownership inscription to the imprint page dated 1884. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting scattered to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are generally very clean throughout. Very Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
