About This Item

Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley brought to the screen for the first time with Alain Delon as Tom Ripley. Archive of 3 original vintage silver gelatin photographs. All in black and white. Two measure 8" x 10" and one measures 5" x 7". The movie was titled Plein Soleil and Purple Noon. The plot follows Tom Ripley, a con artist who is sent from New York City to Italy to convince Dickie Greenleaf, a rich and spoiled playboy, to return home - however, after failing, Ripley takes extreme measures. Directed by Rene Clement and also starring Marie Laforet and Maurice Ronet. The film helped launch Alain Delon's popularity and critic James Berardinelli rated Purple Noon higher than Matt Damon's The Talented Mr. Ripley, when comparing it it to the 1999 film, he stated: "Matt Damon might make a credible Tom Ripley but only for those who never experienced Alain Delon's portrayal." Both the novel and the film have been viewed through the lens of Gay identity, as Highsmith was a famous lesbian pulp author who penned The Price of Salt, which is credited as the first lesbian pulp novel with a happy ending. Three of the photos have title and actors names in the lower white margin. All in very good condition.
