About This Item
New York: The Free Press, 1996. First edition. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 187 pages. Gary Hart's business card laid in. Inscribed to Robert Reich! Signed by author. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Gary Warren Hart ( November 28, 1936) is an American politician, diplomat, and lawyer. He represented Colorado in the United States Senate from 1975 to 1987. Hart returned to private practice after the 1988 election and served in a variety of public roles. He co-chaired the Hart-Rudman Task Force on Homeland Security, served on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, and was the United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland. He earned a doctorate in politics from the University of Oxford and has written for outlets such as the Huffington Post. He has also written several books, including a biography of President James Monroe. What qualifies a political candidate for leadership? In this handbook of advice to an aspiring younger politician, former senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart takes up this question by offering a visionary new political creed of practical idealism. The United States' role in the world hasn't been adequately defined since the end of the Cold War, and perhaps it won't be. But Gary Hart clearly has some ideas on the nation's purpose. Hart, the former Senator whose presidential campaign unraveled amid questions of sexual impropriety, presents his views in this book of 28 essays framed as letters to a young man contemplating a presidential run.
