About This Item

Paul Robeson Australian Tour Program. Sydney, Australia 1960. Signed "Paul Robeson". Robeson was a bass-baritone concert artist, screen and stage actor, football player, and political activist. 12 pages, 9.5" x 7." The first African American to play Othello with a white supporting cast, Paul Robeson was a symbol of civil rights and integration. He became a target of McCarthyism due to his advocacy work for the Council on African Affairs, and was both denied a passport and blacklisted by Hollywood. After fighting a years-long legal battle, he won back his passport; this Australian playbill is evidence of his success and resilience. It contains song lyrics and a biography by Benny Green, which states Robeson has become "a symbol of all that is finest in his race, our race, the human race." Contains illustrated wrappers with Robeson's signature on the back cover image of himself. Very good condition.
