About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1858. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". H. K. Browne. A first edition copy of Augustus Mayhew's novel 'Paved with Gold', with numerous illustrated plates by the renowned artist H. K. Browne. Augustus Septimus Mayhew was a renowned English journalist and author, best known for his works produced in collaboration with his brother Henry Mayhew. Divided into three parts, this is a tale of London life in the mid-Victorian era. This copy has been rebound in a half polished calf signed 'Whitmore' binding, with marbled paper over boards and a bookbinder's label tipped to the front pastedown. With an illustrated title page and twenty five plates by Hablot Knight Browne (or Phiz), a well-known artist and illustrator renowned for his illustrations in the works of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth. Whilst there is no frontispiece plate to this work, this copy is complete with the plate '"Phil" Tries a New Walk in Life' bound to page 128, that is often bound as the frontispiece in other first edition copies. With plate 'The Great 100 Rat March' misbound facing page 193. Rebound in a half polished calf signed 'Whitmore' binding with marbled paper over boards. Externally generally smart with rubbing to extremities and joints and boards. The odd mark to boards, with small sections of loss to marbled paper boards. Hinges split and tender, but reasonably firm. Bookbinder's label tipped to front pastedown. Slight creasing to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean. Light scattered spots to fore edge of the occasional plate. With light offsetting to reverse of plates. Very Good
