About This Item
London : Chapman and Hall, 1858. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Phiz. A first edition of this novel by Augustus Mayhew. Augustus Septimus Mayhew (1826 25 December 1875) was an English journalist and author, born in London. He wrote in collaboration with his brother Henry. His individual productions include Paved with Gold, or the Romance and Reality of the London Streets (1858) and Faces for Fortunes (three volumes, 1865). Divided into three parts, this is a tale of London life in the mid-Victorian era. Illustrated by H. K. Browne, a.k.a. 'Phiz'. In a brown cloth binding. Externally sound, though with some marks to the boards and wear to the head and tail of the spine. Corners are slightly bumped. Front hinge slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some scattered spotting and the odd patch of foxing throughout. Good
