About This Item

Presumably first edition.

French language. [118] pages (unnumbered), [1] leaf inserted; ill. (colour); 25 x 28 cm. Includes Legend containing pertinent information about each photo.

Blue cloth hardcover with white lettering to spine shows a few minor indentations, internally clean and clear with the exception of the ffep sporting a few unobtrusive library pencil markings and a large personal inscription in ink. The dust jacket has some wear, including closed tears, chipping, scuffs, etc.

From dust jacket (Googletrans):

Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Egypt: the titles of the chapters of this album immediately evoke images of violence, heartbreaks, armed conflicts... Charles Luke Powell has deliberately chosen to show only the beauty of these lands. An exceptional serenity permeates, like a light, his photographs: grandiose landscapes, lands and lives on the margins of time, ancestral gestures. His particular sensitivity, his sense of color and light, his technical mastery give us a new and unforgettable image of these countries and immediately establish him as a very great photographer. Camille Bourniquel's beautiful introductory text analyzes both the approach of Charles Luke Powell - "photographer of peace" his vision as a painter and the exceptional plastic beauty of his photographs. It highlights their most striking originality: expressing the feeling of the sacred inscribed in the landscapes themselves, which were the cradle of all the great religions.
Charles Luke Powell, born in 1946 in North Carolina, lives in Virginia when he is not on the road. His work has never been published, but was exhibited in 1975 at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Lausanne.
Camille Bourniquel, born in 1918 in Paris, was literary director of the magazine Esprit from 1958 to 1977. Novelist, poet, essayist, he is also the author of numerous books and articles on non-figurative art and sacred art. Among his novels, let us mention Le Lac (1963), Selinonte ou la Chambre imperiale (Medicis Prize 1970), Tempo (grand prize of the French Academy 1977).

90 color photographic illustrations.

From the library of Monseigneur Maurice Beaudeaux (1902-1988), who was an Officer of the Order of Canada and archbishop of Saint Boniface, Manitoba, Canada, awarded the honour of the OC for his work in the western provinces on behalf of French Canada.

En français (GoogleTrans):

Probablement première édition.

Français. [118] pages (non numérotées), [1] feuille insérée ; je vais. (couleur); 25 x 28 cm.
