About This Item

Houghton Mifflin, 1992. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good+. Tom Shefelman detailed color illustrations. CONDITION: MIXED. INSCRIBED BY BOTH THE AUTHOR AND THE ILLUSTRATOR (WITH DRAWING) on front end page. Also a small gift inscription bottom of that page. As New 1992 Houghton Mifflin hardcover (tan & gold decorated boards) & dust jacket (in mylar cover), first edition, first printing. PROBLEM: DJ has very light loss of color on 2 letters on the dust jacket title. The color illustrations by Tom Shefelman are detailed and beautiful. CONTENT: When Solomon Joseph Azar immigrates to America from Lebanon in 1909, he brings with him ambition and the willingness to work. Though not without setbacks, he starts as a peddler and then works as a store clerk until he can return to Lebanon to marry his betrothed and bring her back to the U. S. They start a family and build their business. A fire at his store ruins the building but not his plans. Ultimately, Solomon fulfills his every wish. Detailed ink and full-color watercolor illustrations help convey a sense of time and place in this idealized story of the American Dream realized. Listed for Grades 1 - 3, but I think this is more in line with grades 5+.
