At its height, 50% of German and Italian shipping failed to make their destinations. No fewer than seventy-five enemy ships were sunk, totalling 400,000-tons. But the price was equally high. Of the twenty submarines based in Malta, half were lost in action. These losses notwithstanding, the effort made by these few British submarines helped to assure victory in North Africa - the first major Allied success of World War II.
