About This Item
UK: RIAS Publishing, 2000. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 21.4 x 13.6 x 1.4 cm. p/b 240 pages, condition is very good. The 'Fair City' of Perth is the starting point for this much sought after guide in the RIAS/Landmark Trust series. The Gateway to the Highlands, it was second only to Berwick in terms of wealth by 1200 and a meeting place of parliaments and general councils when Scone Palace witnessed the coronations of Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II. Magical buildings abound in the surrounding countryside: Taymouth Castle, the extraordinary powerhouse of the Campbells of Breadalbane; Dunkeld Cathedral and Blair Castle, highland romanticism at its most spectacular. Great writers, artists, musicians, architects, and engineers have all responded to the great natural beauty of the area. Queen Victoria visited the area frequently and loved the 'view' of Loch Tummel and the 'Road to the Isles'. The book finishes in Kinross-shire, the second smallest county, where architects William Bruce and William Adam built their homes, and where Mary, Queen of Scots, was held prisoner in Lochleven Castle. The book will take you to all these places and more and will fill a major gap in the series in the heart of Scotland.
