About This Item

London: The Architectural Press. Very Good in Very Good dustjacket. 1981. First Edition. Original boards. 0851390722 . With frontispiece & illustrations. Slight wear to spine, covers, corners & dustjacket. ; Peter Behrens (1868–1940) was a German architect and designer who played a significant role in the early 20th-century architectural and design movements. He is often considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture and industrial design. Here are some key aspects of Peter Behrens' life and work: Architectural Career: Behrens began his career as an architect and was associated with the German Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement. One of his notable early works was the design of the AEG Turbine Factory in Berlin (1908-1909). This industrial building is often regarded as one of the first examples of modern industrial architecture. Industrial Design and Corporate Identity: Behrens was a versatile designer and played a crucial role in shaping the concept of corporate identity. He was appointed by the AEG (Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft) company in 1907 as an artistic consultant. At AEG, Behrens not only designed industrial facilities but also worked on the design of products, logos, and promotional materials. This comprehensive approach to design marked the beginning of a more integrated and holistic design philosophy. Colleague of Walter Gropius and the Deutscher Werkbund: Peter Behrens was a mentor to several important figures in modern architecture, including Walter Gropius, who later became the founder of the Bauhaus School. Behrens was involved with the Deutscher Werkbund, a German association of artists, architects, and designers that aimed to integrate traditional crafts with modern industrial techniques. Design of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony: Behrens was involved in the design of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony (1901-1914) , a residential community for artists that aimed to integrate architecture, art, and craftsmanship. The project involved collaboration with other influential artists of the time. Later Career: After World War I, Behrens continued his career in various capacities. He served as the city architect of Vienna and designed residential buildings and public projects. In the 1920s, he worked on projects in Switzerland and the Netherlands, contributing to the development of modernist architecture. Peter Behrens' influence extended beyond his own built works, as his approach to integrating architecture, design, and industrial processes laid the groundwork for the modernist movement. His teachings and mentorship played a crucial role in shaping the next generation of architects and designers. ; Octavo; 186 pages .
