London: B. T. Batsford Ltd,, 1949. First edition, deluxe issue, one of 350 unnumbered copies printed on handmade paper and specially bound in half morocco. This lavish biography of Peter Carl Faberge (1846-1920), creator of the famed Faberge eggs, was written by the manager of the jeweller's London emporium. A further 1,750 copies printed on machine-made paper and bound in cloth were also issued. Quarto. Original blue half morocco, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, cream cloth sides with Imperial Russian lesser coat of arms blocked in gilt to front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With original light blue cloth slipcase, lined with brown felt. Portrait frontispiece, 126 plates, including 2 doubles and 16 in colour, title page printed in red and black, errata slip tipped in after p. xxiv. Moderate sunning to spine, light finger soiling to covers, small spot of wear to morocco on front cover, sporadic minor foxing to endpapers; slight toning and a few small stains to slipcase, minor cockling and peeling to top and base panels: a very good copy in good slipcase.
