A complete four volume first edition of one of Sir Walter Scott's best known Waverley novels, 'Peveril of the Peak'. The first edition, mixed state. The first state title page, with comma at end of the third line of the publisher's imprint, appears in volume III only, with volumes I, II and IV title pages in the second state. Todd & Bowden 165Aa.Set in seventeenth century England, and concerning the Popish Plot, Scott's novel follows the adventures of Julian Peveril, a young man caught up in a web of political intrigue and personal rivalries.The errata leaf does not appear in volume III. Bound without half titles.With the inscriptions of William Wing and Stephen Aslm, dated May 21st 1842, to a front blank of each volume. Rebacked in morocco, retaining the original calf boards. Endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent. Front hinge of each volume lightly strained, but firmly held. Inscriptions to a front blank of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light spotting only appearing to first and last few leaves of each volume. Very Good Indeed
