About This Item

Princeton, NJ Princeton University Press, 1967. Paperback First Edition Thus (1967), Fifth Printing (1974). Very Good+ in Wraps: shows only a hint of wear to extremities; the very mildest rubbing and the consequent hint of soiling to the white background field of the rear panel; a small, very faint coffee stain at the top edge of the top edge of the text block which shows faint overall dusting; the binding leans ever so slightly while remaining secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the panels. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of any creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing a couple of minor, unobtrusive imperfections. Bright and clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8 x 5.15 x 0.65 inches). xcvii, 260 pages. Originally translated and introduced by David Swenson. New Introduction and Commentary by Niels Thulstrup. Translation revised and commentary translated by Howard Vincent Hong. Language: English. Weight: 12 ounces. University Press Paperback. Through Climacus, Kierkegaard contrasts the paradoxes of Christianity with Greek and modern philosophical thinking. In Philosophical Fragments he begins with Greek Platonic philosophy, exploring the implications of venturing beyond the Socratic understanding of truth acquired through recollection to the Christian experience of acquiring truth through grace. Published in 1844 and not originally planned to appear under the pseudonym Climacus, the book varies in tone and substance from the other works so attributed, but it is dialectically related to them, as well as to the other pseudonymous writings.

Synopsis

Philosophical Fragments was a philosophical work written by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard in 1844 and the first of three works written under the pseudonym Johannes Climacus. The question involves how knowledge can be known, and Climacus discusses how the theories of Socratic recollection and Christian divinity can inform the learner of truth. At the same time, it is an important early text in existentialist philosophy.
