About This Item
Basil Blackwell, 1963. hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 0x0x0. 1963 reprint of second edition, Basil Blackwell (Oxford, England), 5 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches tall blue cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to spine, illustrated with black-and-white and color diagrams, viii, 232 pp. Very slight soiling and edgewear to covers. Otherwise, a near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in an only very slightly soiled dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~SP38~ [2.0P] Written by one of the century's truly great thinkers, Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations is a remarkable - and surprisingly approachable - collection of insights, statements, and nearly displayed thinking habits of the philosopher's work on language, symbols, categories, and a host of other topics. In its preface, Wittgenstein says that Philosophical Investigations can be understood 'only by contrast with and against the background of my old way of thinking.' That 'old way of thinking' is to be found in the only book Wittgenstein published in his lifetime, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Many of the ideas developed in the Tractatus are criticized in the Investigations, while other ideas are further developed.
Synopsis
Philosophical Investigations (Philosophische Untersuchungen) is, along with the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, one of the two most influential works by the 20th-century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. In it, Wittgenstein discusses numerous problems and puzzles in the fields of semantics, logic, philosophy of mathematics, and the philosophy of mind.
